Democrats Prove They Are Not Serious About Keeping Terrorist From Buying Guns.

From Today's the Hill

A Democratic source said the more controversial gun-purchase provision may be similar to a bill sponsored by Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) that’s backed by the National Rifle Association.
Democrats say the Cornyn bill doesn’t go far enough since it includes a “probable cause” standard that would require law enforcement officials to prove that a gun buyer is an actual terrorist rather than a suspected terrorist.
Instead, Democrats want a vote on legislation that would bar firearm sales to anyone on a terrorism watch list or no-fly list.

Get that? The Democrats don't think you need to actually prove a suspect is a terrorist before you deny him the right to keep and bare arms.

This just shows how un-serious they are about passing constitutional gun laws. It may thrill their base but not the majority of Americans who actually believe in the second amendment.

This is a political loser for the Democrats. Fortunately for the Republicans, Nancy Pelosi is too stupid to figure that out.

A law that used the "terror watch list" as a means to take away your second amendment rights, would face serious legal problems.

The very first would be problems with a lack of due process regarding those who end up on the list. What other constitutional rights would you allow the government to take away from Americans for simply appearing on a "list" that has no set means to determine the reasons for being added.

Perhaps if you were on some "blacklist" your rights to a jury trial could be simply taken away? How far would a law like that make it? How many people would be in favor of an arbitrary list allowing law enforcement to lock an American citizen up without a trial?

You guys are missing the point. Sure, you're right that using the watch list to restrict gun ownership is unconstitutional. I agree, it would never pass the courts.

But it's just about the vote. The Democrats need a vote, to prove that they're trying to do something about terrorism and gun violence in general, and that the Republicans are stopping them. The more unreasonable, the better, because heaven forbid that the measure actually passes. It's hard to blame the evil Republicans for a successful bipartisan security measure. So you might as well shoot for the moon.

It works for the Republicans as well, who have the opportunity to polish up their NRA credentials, having stopped those gun-hating Liberal fools. It's win-win, everyone happy except for us common Americans who let ourselves get suckered into the outrage of it all.

IMO WP if Democrats are doing this just to have the issue for the election then I think it will backfire on them.

Could be, that possibility is what the Republicans get out of it. This happens every time an incident makes national news. One side proposes some over-reaching gun control legislation, the other side fights tooth and nail, and both sides make political hay out of it while the NRA gets to stir the membership up. It's all bullshit.

When will REASONABLE gun laws be passed?

The country has an obesity epidemic. Do we take away forks to stop it?

Thus is a people issue. Obama is importing terrorists among the nonterrorists.

pass all the gun laws you want. criminals, by definition, break laws. it's what they do.

chicago is a goddamned shooting gallery, especially on a holiday weekend. it's also home to some of the toughest gun laws on earth.

so tell me how passing even more gun laws fixes the problem.

Well James, the Republican proposed a law keeping terrorist from buying guns while keeping due process protections intact.

I'd say that's pretty REASONABLE.

Maybe you should ask your Democrat friends in Congress why they vetoed it.
